Semester 1

My artmaking has informed my research as it has inspired my choice in who I focussed my research on and how I wanted to interpret the work in regards to my own project. For example, my initial research in my library induction led to the idea of colour and the aetiology behind Darwin (and colour’s connection to nature and natural selection). However, in the artmaking processing of my 2D printing, I felt like I needed to incorporate more texture and line-art, leading me to a personal favourite artist Henrietta Harris, but also introducing me to embroidery artist Ana Teresa Barboza.

Specific materials I used which enhanced my project included embroidery, woodwork, and clay. This is because 2D (screen) printing with embroidery introduced me to the idea that I could somehow incorporate 3D forms into my work in emphasising the debate of nature verses nurture, leading me to clay. In my 3D induction I unsuccessfully tried mod rock as I found it did not give me the control to create the texture of the brain and wing I intended to achieve, the experimentation leading me to clay. Furthermore, this use of clay sculpting led me to using wood to create armatures.

I always intended to present my work in the way I have, with a black wooden armature to hold wooden scales at eye height, making my final piece more observable and making viewers likely to give it more thought and therefore the debate of nature verses nurture (and the link between people and the world around us- along with other meanings others may interpret). Feedback during the exhibition found the two thought processes were most common in reflection of my presenting artwork. Furthermore, a black armature, neutral-brown scale, and white wall background brought colour and attention to my warm-toned sculptures.
